Spirulina - Blue-Green Algae Raw Material

Spirulina (Spirulina platensis) is a cyanobacterium often described in commercial language as blue-green algae. It is one of the most studied microalgae used in food and dietary supplements, and is naturally rich in protein, B vitamins, iron, and essential fatty acids. The blue-green pigment, phycocyanin, is a characteristic compound that has also been studied for antioxidant activity. Spirulina is supplied in food-grade powder form, intended for manufacturers producing green superfood blends, daily nutrition supplements, sports nutrition products, and functional foods.

This raw material is sometimes marketed under the trade name Chloroplasma, but the underlying species is Spirulina platensis.
